All tents (>200 square feet) and canopies (>400 square feet) erected on ECU property must be permitted by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

To assist departments in compliance with this requirement, EH&S will serve as intermediary between the department and NCDOI. We have developed an application/checklist that will hopefully simplify the notification/application process. As events are scheduled involving tents/canopies satisfying the size parameters listed above, please complete the Tent & Canopy Permit application below and submit to EH&S along with any required attachments (site plan and floor plan/seating arrangements, etc. when required). EH&S will conduct a preliminary review and submit the application(s) to NCDOI for review/approval. EH&S will then provide notification to the applicant regarding status of the permit. We will be available to assist you throughout this process.

Upon obtaining satisfactory evidence that the proposed structure will be in accordance with minimum Code requirements, NCDOI issues a permit in the form of a signed approval letter (or an E-mail). Plans must be submitted to NCDOI well in advance of the event to allow time for NCDOI review and for the vendor to respond to any resulting questions and/or possible site visit by NCDOI staff to better assess the plan. If plans are not submitted to NCDOI soon enough to allow a reasonable time for evaluation and approval, the event can not be approved and must be either rescheduled or canceled. 30 days advance notification is recommended.
